Nursing and lactation in dogs and cats

As with humans, a mother’s milk is the perfect food for newborn puppies
and kittens. Nursing is a natural and beautiful process and anyone who has
ever seen a litter nursing contentedly will attest to this. Young puppies and
kittens have very high nutritional requirements for their extremely fast
growth rates and high energy levels. In fact, eating and sleeping are the
two major activities of the first two weeks of life!  Puppies and kittens
generally double their birth weight by the 8th or 10th day of life.

The first meal a puppy or kitten will have after birth is of colostrum, the
first type of milk produced by the mother. This is a very important
substance for puppies and kittens as colostrum contains antibodies and
nutrients essential for the newborn animal’s nutrition as well as to boost
their immune systems. It is crucial that each puppy or kitten receives
his/her share of colostrum so keep an eye on the smaller, less pushy
animals in the litter at this time to make sure they get a chance.

Colostrum is only available to the litter for 24 hours after birth.
Thereafter mature milk is produced by the mother for her offspring.
Mature milk contains none of the immune factors that colostrum does
but is the perfect source of all-round nutrition for puppies and kittens.

The natural way

Because the entire litter’s energy requirements must be met by the mother,
lactation is a very nutritionally demanding time for your female dog or cat.
A complete and balanced diet is very important and she will need between
one and a half to three times more food than usual - as well as plenty of
fresh water - while nursing.

Peace and quiet and a relaxing, secure environment are important, especially
in the first few weeks and while milk supply is being established. Frequent
visitors and handling of the young can be very stressful for the nursing
mother and this can interfere with milk production, so keep visitors to a
minimum and do not allow puppies and kittens to be picked up by unfamiliar
people, especially if this distresses the mother.

How has LacToll helped others?

“Within days of giving Sheila your LacToll, her milk production had increased
vastly and the pups seemed so much less frustrated and hungry! They are
now all healthy and growing well. I will be giving this to Sheila as soon as her
next litter is born to avoid the initial problems we had this time. Many thanks! ”

—Jacqui

“We have been breeding Rottweilers for many years now and …we have quite
a good deal of experience... especially with large litters. Knowing the advantages
of puppies nursing 100% rather than supplementing with commercial milk
products I was keen to find a natural way to (support)… milk production.
Friends suggested your website and we were excited to try LacToll with our
latest litter. I must say that I think it worked incredibly - we haven’t had such
a well-fed and thoroughly healthy litter in years! I will certainly be giving your
other products a try in the future!”

“On August 16th my little 4 pound Maltese went into labor. After being in
labor for 4 hours, she went to the vet for a cesarean. During the surgery
the veterinarian noticed she had no milk at all in her mammary glands. He
told me that I would most likely be bottle-feeding the puppies. The surgery
went very well and 2 healthy puppies were born. At home I bottle fed the
babies. At the same time I ordered LacToll from Native Remedies with one
day shipping. WOW! I used it as directed for one day. On the following
day she was full of milk. Without LacToll, I know I would still be bottle
feeding the puppies. LacToll works!! The veterinarian has now
recommended it to clients in the same situation. Thank you Native
Remedies!! I will continue to use your products.”

LacToll contains the following 100% natural ingredients:

   * Milk Thistle (Silybum marianus) is most widely known for its positive
effects on liver functioning and lactation. Milk Thistle is excellent for
promoting the production of milk in nursing mothers and, due to its liver
tonic properties, has also been shown to reduce the amounts of synthetic
substances from the environment, like pollution and pesticides, in
mothers’ milk.

   * Goat’s Rue (Galega officinalis) is excellent for stimulating production
and flow of milk for healthy lactation. Galega is also useful in protecting
against infection and will help to prevent mastitis.

   * Fennel (Foeniculum officinale) can increase the natural production
of milk and has long been used to stimulate healthy lactation in nursing
women and also in pets. Fennel is also an excellent digestive tonic and
blood cleanser.

   * Borage (Borago officinalis) increases milk production. This herb
also contains soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients that help recovery
from whelping or queening and act as a tonic remedy for digestive and
bowel functioning.

symptoms in your pet, natural medicine strives to create
holistic balance in their body to support systemic health,
relieve ailments, and help prevent future disease. Unlike
pharmaceutical drugs, the natural ingredients in our remedies support the
overall health and functioning in your pet, rather than just suppressing symptoms.

Pets respond to natural medicine in different ways, some pets experience immediate
results while many other pet owners have reported optimal benefits taking effect
in their pets within 3-6 weeks. To ensure your pet receives optimum results it is
important to administer natural remedies as directed and remain consistent.
You may also find that a smaller maintenance dose is beneficial for ongoing
support, many pets take a regular maintenance dose as part of a preventative

Tips for pet owners

   * Whelping or queening is a very stressful time for your pet.  By all
means, keep a careful eye on proceedings but don’t interfere unless
you feel that a puppy or kitten may be in distress.

   * Most cats and dogs are excellent mothers.  Their natural maternal
instinct is usually all that’s needed to produce a happy litter.

   * Remember that some mothers may be very protective of their
offspring, don’t be surprised if the new mother gives a warning
growl or two when you come to ogle the new members of the family.

   * Puppies or kittens that are continuously crying are either hungry or cold.

   * If the mother is unable to feed for whatever reason, you will need to
hand-raise the kittens or puppies. Newborns need frequent feedings
       with an appropriate milk substitute
(so be prepared for many sleepless nights!).

   * Enjoy having puppies and kittens in the house.  They’ll be lots of
hard work but this is a rewarding experience, especially for young children.

   * Make sure that the homes you find for your puppies and kittens are suitable.
Remind new owners that puppies and kittens turn into dogs and cats and
that it is their responsibility to provide for their new furry companions.
